A General Survey of Socio-Cultural Reform Movement Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Brahmo Samaj :- Ram Mohan Roy was called the father of Indian Renaissance and maker of Modern India.   He wrote Gift to Monotheists (1809) and translated the Vedas and five Upnishad into Bengali to prove his conviction that ancient Hindu texts support monotheism.   In 1814 he set up the Atmiya Sabha (or Society of Friends ) in Calcutta to propagate the monotheistic ideals of vedanta and to campaign against idolatry, caste rigidities, meaningless rituals and other social ills.   He wrote Percepts of Jesus (1820).   Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Sabha in august 1828.     Socio-Religious Reform Movement: General Features Influenced by Raja Rammohan Roy , the government declared the practice of Sati illegal and punishable by criminal courts as culpable homicide. The regulation of 1829 was applicable in the first instance to Bengal presidency alone but was extended in slightly modified forms to Madras and Bombay presidencies in 1830.
